Gaiam began in Colorado in 1988 as a company started by entrepreneur Jirka Rysavy that sold yoga equipment, exercise videos and other wellness products by mail order. That company sold the Gaiam brand and its yoga equipment business to Sequential Brands Group in 2016 and renamed itself Gaia, Inc. The Gaiam brand is now owned by Galaxy Universal, a footwear and brand-management company, and its website lists a New York address.
Gaiam's range covers yoga mats in PVC, TPE and jute versions, blocks, straps and other props, products for active sitting, fitness accessories and the Gaiam Restore wellness line. The brand says it reaches about 38,000 retail doors plus thousands of store-within-store and category-management locations, and it also sells directly through its website.
Testing & quality
Gaiam backs most of its yoga mats with what it calls a lifetime mat guarantee and says its PVC mats are latex-free and made without the six most harmful phthalates. Unopened, unused direct purchases can be returned within 30 days.
