How We Review & Score Products

The FR Score explained: how we synthesize independent video reviews, analyze formulas and specs, and weigh value, with no paid placements.

Every product on FitnessReviews.org carries an FR Score from 0 to 10: our best summary of what's known about it, built from evidence you can check. Here's how it works.

The FR Score at a glance

Each score blends three inputs:

  1. Reviewer consensus. We gather independent video reviews from YouTube and TikTok and look for the points most creators agree on, from taste and build quality to durability and everyday annoyances. One enthusiastic video doesn't make a verdict; a pattern across many does.
  2. Formula and spec analysis. We read supplement labels, spec sheets and certificates, then compare them with published research and category norms. For supplements, that includes third-party testing programs such as NSF Certified for Sport, Informed Sport and USP Verified. For equipment and tech, it includes materials, construction, warranty terms and claims that reviewers confirm or contradict.
  3. Value for money. A product has to justify its price against real alternatives, measured the way it's actually used: per serving, per pound of weight, per year of ownership.

We don't run a laboratory, and we never claim first-hand lab testing. The FR Score is a transparent synthesis of the best available evidence.

Four criteria per department

Every product is rated from 0 to 10 on four criteria tailored to its department, and those sub-scores combine into the overall FR Score.

Labels occasionally adapt to the product type; protein bars, for example, are judged on taste and texture.

Supplements

  • Formula & Dosing: Key ingredients at research-supported amounts, with every dose disclosed.
  • Quality & Transparency: Third-party certification, published testing, no hidden proprietary blends and a clean compliance history.
  • Taste & Mixability: Reviewer consensus on flavor, texture, clumping and aftertaste.
  • Value per Serving: Cost per effective serving, such as per 25 g of protein or per 5 g of creatine.

Equipment

  • Build Quality & Durability: Materials, construction, long-term owner reports and warranty coverage.
  • Performance & Feel: How well it does its job, from a smooth weight change to a stable bench or a natural rowing stroke.
  • Ease of Use & Footprint: Setup, adjustments, noise and how much space it takes up at home.
  • Value for Money: Price against comparable equipment and expected lifespan.

Recovery and tech

  • Performance/Accuracy: Sensor accuracy in reviewer comparisons against reference devices, or real-world power and effectiveness for recovery tools.
  • Features & Software: App quality, useful insights, data export and whether key features require a subscription.
  • Build & Battery: Materials, water resistance, comfort and battery life under realistic use.
  • Value: Total cost of ownership, including memberships.

Training shoes

  • Performance: Stability, lateral support and flexibility for the training the shoe is built for.
  • Comfort & Fit: Toe-box room, heel lockdown and sizing consistency.
  • Durability: Outsole, upper and midsole wear reported over time.
  • Value: Price against lifespan and versatility.

How we choose video reviews

An FR Score is only as good as the reviews behind it, so we're selective:

  • Independence first. We prioritize creators with no commercial relationship with the brand. Brand-owned channels don't count toward consensus.
  • Sponsorships where known. When a creator discloses a sponsorship, or we otherwise know a video was paid for, we give it less weight.
  • Recency. We favor reviews of the current version or formula and use older videos mainly for long-term context.
  • Depth. Long-term updates, head-to-head comparisons and hands-on demonstrations carry more weight than quick unboxings.
  • Balance. We include mixed and negative reviews, not just glowing ones, and label each video's verdict.

Videos are embedded from or linked to their original platforms, and creators always own their work. Any creator can ask us to remove a video.

How often scores are updated

We revisit our best-of guides at least quarterly and recheck every individual score at least once a year. Some events trigger an immediate review:

  • a reformulation, new model or hardware revision
  • a meaningful shift in reviewer consensus, especially from long-term follow-ups
  • a gained, lost or expired third-party certification
  • a recall, safety notice or regulatory warning
  • a significant, lasting price change

Prices move constantly, so the prices we display are approximate snapshots; always confirm on the retailer's page.

Corrections policy

We'd rather fix mistakes fast than defend them. If you spot an error, such as an outdated spec, a wrong dose or a mislabeled video, please contact us. We verify every report, correct confirmed errors promptly, and add a dated note whenever a correction changes a score or recommendation. Brands can flag factual errors with supporting evidence, but they cannot request or negotiate score changes.

What we never do

  • Accept payment for scores, rankings or placement
  • Let affiliate commissions influence a score or ranking (see our affiliate disclosure)
  • Claim first-hand lab testing we haven't done
  • Invent reviews, quotes, studies or statistics
