Manduka grew out of a mat that Peter Sterios, an architect turned yoga teacher, discovered in 1997; he sent the mats as gifts to yoga teachers he admired, who became his first customers and shared the mats with their students. The name honors his teacher Shandor Remete and the frog pose, Mandukasana. Manduka, LLC is based in El Segundo, California, and the company also has a European entity, Manduka B.V.

Manduka is known for its PRO series of yoga mats, including the PRO, PROlite, PRO Travel, PRO Squared and long-and-wide versions, which it says have been made in Germany since 1997 with a closed-cell surface. The range also includes natural-rubber eKO mats made in Taiwan, GRP Adapt mats made in Spain, the X hybrid fitness mat and the begin mat, along with yoga props and clothing. Manduka sells through its website and authorized sellers.

Testing & quality

Manduka guarantees its PRO series mats for the lifetime of the mat, which it puts at about 10 years of regular use, and will replace a PRO mat that wears out under normal conditions (one replacement per purchase, US purchases from Manduka or authorized sellers).
