PowerBlock was founded by Carl Towley, who, according to the company, came up with the idea for a compact adjustable dumbbell while working on gym equipment in Santa Cruz. The company started in 1993 in a small, unheated workshop in Owatonna, Minnesota, and is now based in Burnsville, Minnesota.

PowerBlock dumbbells nest the weight plates around the handle, and a U-shaped selector pin sets the load. The home range includes the Sport, Pro, Elite EXP and Elite USA models, several of which can be expanded with add-on kits, and the Elite USA line uses steel plates made in the United States alongside globally sourced parts. PowerBlock also makes commercial dumbbell sets, adjustable kettlebells, benches, stands and bar attachments, and it sells direct through its website and through authorized dealers.

Testing & quality

Home adjustable dumbbells, including the Elite EXP, carry a five-year limited warranty on the handle assembly and weight plates and one year on the selector pin and micro weights. Coverage requires registration within 30 days and a purchase from PowerBlock or an authorized reseller.
