FR Score

Quest Nutrition was founded in 2010 in El Segundo, California, by Tom Bilyeu, Ron Penna and Mike Osborn, three partners who had previously sold a software company; its first bars grew out of snacks Penna's wife had been making at home. The Simply Good Foods Company, the Denver-based maker of Atkins products, acquired Quest in November 2019, and Quest still lists El Segundo as its mailing address.

Quest is known for high-protein, low-sugar snacks: protein bars, protein chips and other salty snacks, cookies, candy, ready-to-drink shakes and protein powder. About three-quarters of its U.S. sales come through mass retailers, grocery and convenience stores, according to its parent company, and it also sells through its own online store. Quest's products are made by contract manufacturers; Simply Good Foods says those manufacturers are regularly audited by third parties and that random finished-goods samples are sent to an outside lab for testing.

Testing & quality

Quest does not publish brand-level testing results. Parent Simply Good Foods says its contract manufacturers are regularly audited by third parties, random finished-goods samples are sent to a third-party lab, and its U.S. operations hold ISO 22000 certification.
