Fitbit was co-founded by James Park and Eric Friedman; the company was incorporated in March 2007 as Healthy Metrics Research and took the Fitbit name that October. Headquartered in San Francisco, it listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 2015, and Google completed its acquisition of Fitbit in January 2021. The brand now sits inside Google's hardware business, and in May 2026 Google began replacing the Fitbit app with the Google Health app.
Fitbit is known for wrist-worn activity trackers and smartwatches that log steps, heart rate, sleep and workouts. The Fitbit-branded devices currently sold on the Google Store are the Charge 6, Inspire 3, Versa 4, Sense 2 and Ace LTE, plus the screenless Fitbit Air tracker that Google announced in May 2026 alongside the Google Health app and says works with both Android phones and iPhones. Google sells the devices through its online Google Store.
Testing & quality
Fitbit's limited warranty, now published by Google, covers new Fitbit-branded devices and accessories against defects in materials and workmanship for one year in the US (two years in the European Economic Area); certified refurbished units get 90 days.
