The verdict

The Charge 6 is a popular, easy-to-wear band: 24/7 heart rate, sleep and stress tracking, built-in GPS and handy Google Maps, Wallet and YouTube Music integration for well under $200. Its GPS is hit-or-miss and the best coaching sits behind an optional subscription, but for everyday tracking it's a great deal.

Overview

The Charge 6 is Fitbit's flagship band and, three years after its 2023 launch, still the newest Charge model. It brings back a haptic side button and adds Google essentials to the classic Charge formula: Google Maps turn-by-turn directions, Google Wallet tap-to-pay and YouTube Music controls. It tracks 24/7 heart rate, sleep, SpO2, stress (including an EDA scan) and Daily Readiness, offers 40-plus exercise modes and an ECG app, and can broadcast your heart rate to compatible gym equipment. Battery life is rated at up to 7 days, it's water resistant to 50 meters, and Google's optional Health Premium subscription unlocks personalized coaching.

What reviewers say

DC Rainmaker called it a great deal for 24/7 tracking with reasonable heart-rate accuracy, thanks to new algorithms and sensor design, but found the built-in GPS still very hit-or-miss and recommends using your phone's GPS for runs. The Quantified Scientist's lab-style test flagged improved heart-rate tracking, and CNET says there's a lot to like, especially the battery life, while warning about subscription fatigue.

Who it's for

Beginners and everyday exercisers who want reliable step, sleep and heart-rate tracking in a slim band, plus a few smart conveniences, without wearing a full smartwatch.

Bottom line

The Charge 6 remains the simplest recommendation for everyday fitness tracking. Serious runners should look at a GPS watch instead, and it pays to wait for one of its frequent sales.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Fitbit Charge 6 need a subscription?
No. Core tracking, including heart rate, sleep, GPS workouts and stress, works without one. Google Health Premium is optional and adds personalized coaching; the Charge 6 includes a three-month trial.
Is the Charge 6's GPS good enough for running?
It works, but DC Rainmaker found the built-in GPS hit-or-miss and suggests using connected GPS through your phone for more reliable pace and distance. Dedicated runners are better served by a GPS watch like the Forerunner 265.
Should I get the Charge 6 or the new Fitbit Air?
Google's Fitbit Air ($99.99) is a screenless band focused on 24/7 health tracking. Choose the Charge 6 if you want a display, built-in GPS, Google Maps, Wallet and an ECG app on your wrist.
