Garmin was founded in 1989 by electrical engineers Gary Burrell and Min Kao. Its main US operations, including large owned facilities, are in Olathe, Kansas, while the parent company, Garmin Ltd., is incorporated in Switzerland with its principal executive offices in Schaffhausen and shares listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Besides fitness, Garmin makes products for the outdoor, marine, aviation and automotive markets.

For training, Garmin sells Forerunner GPS running watches, the Venu, vívoactive, vívosmart, Lily and Bounce smartwatches and fitness bands, the fēnix, Instinct and Enduro adventure watches, cycling computers, power meters and Tacx indoor trainers, plus heart rate chest straps and smart scales. Activity data syncs to the Garmin Connect app and web platform. Garmin runs its own manufacturing facilities in Taiwan, the US, Europe and China, and it sells through independent retailers, dealers and distributors as well as its own online store.

Testing & quality

Garmin's US consumer limited warranty covers non-aviation products against defects in materials or workmanship for one year from purchase. Its annual report says its design, manufacturing, distribution and service functions in the US, Taiwan, China, the Netherlands and the UK are certified to the ISO 9001 quality-management standard.
